Outlook for July

After seeing above average temperatures during the last half of the month of June, what can we expect for the remainder of summer? I am sure most of you are hoping that the heat wave will not continue, I know I am!

The Climate Prediction Center has issued its latest outlook for the upcoming month and it seems that our temperatures will be cooler than the average for this time of year. The average temperature during the month of July ranges from 87 at the very beginning to 89 towards the middle and end of the month. This would give us a break from the heat during the hottest month of the year. When it comes to precipitation for the month, we should see normal rainfall amounts. The average amount of precipitation during July is 3.80" and we should be about that.

Severe Weather Tonight

We saw the hottest day we have seen all year today! A low pressure system is working its way across the midwest right now. The strong cold front associated with this low will be sparking severe thunderstorms along the line. The main threat here being large hail and strong winds in excess of 60 mph, as well as heavy rainfall and dangerous lightning.

The reason for the severe weather is due in part to the strengthening of the low level jet, which has feed plenty of moisture into our area. The daytime heating we have seen is aiding in an unstable airmass as the low pushes further to the East and the cold front slides in behind it. The warm unstable air begins to rise above the cold air mass, thus building up the clouds for thunderstorm development.

Some Like it HOT! HOT! HOT!

The dangerous heat looks to continue for the next couple of days around Central Missouri. We are continuing to see a ridge hang out over the deep south and southern plains states. This leaves us with plenty of open sky, which makes it easy for the sun to heat things up. Factor in the humidity that is all too familiar to Missouri natives and we are seeing heat indices between 100-110 degrees! Over the past week, six of those days have seen actual temperatures in the middle and lower 90s.

Make sure that if you have to be outside you are drinking plenty of water and wearing sunscreen. Also, don't forget about the pets. Don't leave them outside for too long. Remember, if you have a gently used fan or a brand new one to donate to the KOMU Fan Club, please do so. You can drop them off at the Lowe's in Columbia and Jefferson City, or Westlake Hardware in Fulton. Help to keep your neighbors cool during these hot summer days!

Heat Wave!

After seeing plenty of rainfall around the area for the past two days, things are going to be hot and humid for us here in Mid Missouri. The high humidity in addition to temperatures in the lower 90s today and middle 90s tomorrow will make for some uncomfotable heat. When you factor the two together, we will see heat indices in the upper 90s and even above 100 degrees!

While this is perfect weather to be out at the pool or the lake, it will be dangerous. Make sure that you are wearing sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays. Also, stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids, this is important especially if you plan to be outside for extended periods of time. If you can avoid the sun, do so.. especially between 10am and 3pm.

Flash Flooding Situation

With all of the heavy rainfall we have seen this morning, flash flooding continutes to be a major issue today. The flash flood warning is for the counties of Camden, Morgan, Miller, Phelps, Callaway, and Montgomery through the morning hours into the early afternoon.

Report of areas in Montgomery county along highway 70 that are seeing 3-4 feet of water covering the highway, along with several other smaller roadways having flooding issues. Remember in the event of flash flooding, if you see a roadway covered "turn around, don't drown". You never know how deep the flood waters are since you can not see the roadways. Take the necessary precautions and choose alternate routes. Refer to MoDOT for road closings: http://maps.modot.mo.gov/travelerinformation/TravelerInformation.aspx

Active Weather Pattern Continues

There is a stationary front drapped over the midwest that is continuing to bring us showers and thunderstorms throughout your morning into the afternoon as well. The warm air is riding up above the cooler air which is sparking thunderstorm development across the midwest. Some of these do have the potential to be strong to severe. We are in a slight risk for severe weather according to the SPC for your Monday:
http://www.spc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html

That slight risk also looks to continue into tomorrow as well. The unsettled weather pattern will stick around for Tuesday until this stationary front finally moves out. A strong high pressure system will finally knock the boundary line out of here and things will heat up by mid week. After all the rainfall things will get hot and humid around Mid Missouri. We will be close to 90 degrees for Wednesday and Thursdsay!

A Busy Severe Weather Night in Mid Missouri

A very busy weather night across the area. We have seen plenty of severe weather rip across the southern portion of the viewing area and move off to the northeast. We had numerous reports come in of wall clouds and rotation in the clouds which produced funnels. If you have any pictures or video footage of these storms please send it in to KOMU, we would love to see them.

Things look to quiet down for the most part tonight. We could still see a few lingering showers and thunderstorms up to the north and off to the east. The low level jet looks to still feed in plenty of moisture before that cold front moves through tomorrow. This will leave us with a chance to see some showers and thunderstorms yet again. The good news is that we will no longer be in a slight risk for severe weather like we have seen this evening. Make sure you stay tuned with us on KOMU 8, http://www.komu.com/, and KOMU mobile for the latest weather information with Coverage You Can Count On!

Severe Weather Potential 6/9/09-6/10/09

It has been a busy day around Mid Missouri with showers and thunderstorms. The issues has been mainly to the south where we have seen Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and Tornado Warnings throughout the afternoon. We will have a Tornado Watch still in effect until 10pm tonight for the counties of Camden, Phelps, Maries, Miler, and Morgan.

Today we have seen the warm front lift through the area. The low level jet has kicked in really helping to stream moisture from the gulf into the Midwest. Moisture is one of the three components that is needed for severe weather development. You also need lift and instability. Both of these will be present throughout the evening and into your Wednesday as well. This is due in part to the warm front. This front will be turning into a stationary front tomorrow allowing the cool and warm airmassses to mix. Instability will occur along this boundary which brings about showers and thunderstorms to our area.

Also note, we are in a slight risk for Wednesday. You can look at the SPC for the latest information on Severe Weather chances: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/
We will continue to monitor these storms as they develop around the area. Make sure to tune into KOMU8, www.komu.com , and KOMU Mobile (where you can actually track the storms on your cell phone and listen to updates from National Weather Service) for the latest information with Coverage You Can Count On!
